Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Chairman of Dubai Municipality has approved an investment initiative worth AED 35m for improving Umm Suqeim beaches 1, 2, and 3. The project will cover an area of 3.5 kilometers for protecting the shoreline.
There will be five groynes used to protect the 3 beaches. The use of groynes has already proved successful for Jumeriah Beach 1. The project is expected to be completed by March 2015.
Umm Suqeim beaches have been very popular among tourists, thousands visiting them every year. The work will be completed in various phases to ensure it does not affect tourists visiting the beaches. Municipality has requested beachgoers to strictly adhere to safety instructions by not entering the work sites.
Besides solving the issue of beach erosion, this initiative will also help retain and grow tourism, in line with Dubai Vision 2020.
