Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy opened the first electric vehicle charging station in Dubai, at the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (Dewa) main office.
The plan of introducing electric charging statiosn is in line with the Smart Dubai Initiative, which looks to transform Dubai into a smart city, with efficient and smart services, offering residents and tourists a smooth experience.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa, Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads and Transport Authority, RTA, Ahmed bin Byat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of du and many other senior officials of multiple organizations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Al Tayer said, that the station is an essential part of working towards the sustainable smart city. He said the initiative also supported the Dubai Plan 2021 as well as the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 in order to build Dubai as an international hub for trade, finance, tourism and sustainability, as well as leading the global market as far as energy efficiency was concerned. He added that Dewa is focusing on three initiatives at the moment, related to solar energy for buildings, smart applications through smart meters and the setup for vehicle charging stations.
“By transforming Dubai into the smartest city in the world, we aim to make our society happier and provide smart, instant, and seamless services that are available anytime, anywhere.” said Al Tayer.
Dewa will be looking to bring electric vehicles in the emirates and also build 100 charging stations in 2015. This will be achieved through joint effort with multiple national and private companies. These companies will be from the sectors such as, car manufacturers, national airports, shopping malls, petrol stations, RTA, hotels and Dubai Municipality etc., in order to work on the project and implement the plan.
