A compulsory perfume standardization system is to be launched by Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) by July 2014.

Perfume companies that do not comply with standards will not be allowed to make sales in the UAE market as of next year. This decision will protect customers from buying perfumes that do not meet the benchmark.

The perfume industry has been given a year from the date of issuance to come up to the UAE mark and in line with the Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS). This will hold true for both local as well as imported perfumes and new systems will be made to manage this.

This will serve as a customer service effort and protect consumers from counterfeit products and bring down the level of piracy in the perfume industry of UAE.
