Hotels in Dubai will now be charging a new fee called the tourism dirham from customers staying in the hotel.

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) had announced a new fee earlier this year, ‘tourism dirham’ which will be charged from customers from today i.e March 31st. The fee will be charged per room per night from visitors staying at the hotels and hotel apartments. The total amount collected will be directed towards the DTCM.

Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, commented earlier this year: “The introduction of the Tourism Dirham will support ‘Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing’, helping to ensure our continued competitiveness on the global stage which will be reflected positively on the growth of two of our economic pillars – trade and tourism.”

A fee of Dh20 is going to be charged by five-star hotels, Dh15 by four-star hotels, Dh10 by two- and three-star hotels and Dh7 by one-star or budget hotels, as per DTCM.

Management of hotels and travel agencies have shed light on how the tourism dirham will not discourage customers from coming, since it’s a very small fee.

If hotels keep their customer service up to the mark and continue pleasing the guests with improved customer experiences, such a negligible fee will not bother them.
